STICHTING
PLATFORM FOR
TRANSNATIONAL FORENSIC ASSISTANCE
The overall objective of the Foundation (Stichting) is to enhance cross-border (legal) procedures, practices and protocols for registration of missing persons, management and medico-legal identification of unidentified bodies at local, national and transnational level aiming at standardisation and commonality of approach. The Foundation aims to strengthen legal frameworks and local capacities by providing forensic expertise, networking opportunities, capacity building exercises and evidence-based policy input through fieldwork.
The Forensic Missing Migrant Initiative is a project under the umbrella of the Foundation. Learn more here about the Initiative here.
The FORENSIC MISSING MIGRANT INITIATIVE is a project of the PLATFORM for TRANSNATIONAL FORENSIC ASSISTANCE. The initiative was established in response the high number of migrants who remain missing and unidentified in Europe. We aim to raise awareness of the significant barriers in identifying the remains of missing migrants found in the Mediterranean. The initiative aims to support the families of missing migrants searching for their loved ones and to work to improve problems related to investigating and identifying the remains of those who have died on the perilous route to Europe. We seek collaborations with local authorities, forensic experts and organisations. Fieldwork is conducted to document and preserve migrant graves.
ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
We are a Foundation registered in the Netherlands (called a 'Stichting' ). We launched our work in March 2018 following a Shipwreck near Samos, Greece. Those supporting the Foundation have extensive forensic expertise and knowledge of the migration context in Europe. Some are refugees themselves and have crossed into Europe by boat and/or have been involved in a shipwreck. While the Foundation is registered in the Netherlands, our operational base is in Greece and we are working across Europe with other organisations and institutions.
MEET THE TEAM
Under the umbrella of Stichting PLATFORM for TRANSNATIONAL FORENSIC ASSISTANCE, several projects have been launched, most notably the FORENSIC MISSING MIGRANT INITIATIVE. Each of the projects of the Foundation are complementary in supporting the overall mission and aim to address different components of forensic support, be it the missing migrant issue, forensic capacity building or forensic innovation & identification research.
